The Unveiling of Bangladesh and the Evolution of Relations

  • The Unveiling of Bangladesh and the Evolution of Relations

The establishment of Bangladesh as an independent nation was a surprise for the Pakistanis. Pakistan needed to accept Bangladesh since it was real, and other countries began to accept Bangladesh as a nation. The acceptance of Pakistan by Bangladesh in 1974 is the future of cordial relations. It also allowed Bangladesh to be a member of the United Nations.

From the moment of the Independence of Pakistan in 1947, Bengalis were affected. These sentiments become more established with time. At first, the question of provincial autonomy and the issue of language, i.e. Bengali and Urdu, became the most pressing concerns. The most populous province is left behind in every sphere of daily life. No matter the institution, whether public or private, they were denied. The institution of the Army, which is believed to be impartial, has many distinctions.

The Indian support in planning the division from East Pakistan and covert military support during the Agartala conspiracy case and the 1971 war was also a critical factor that led to the conflict. However, Pakistani ruling elites and rulers who were in a mood of jingoism, unaware of the realities of the moment, could not remove their worries or even make any peace. Even at the last minute, when the Pakistani Army was about to lose the battle, the Prime of the government, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, reportedly tore away the Polish resolution in the draft and walked out of the Security Council in a gesture of protest.

One of the biggest reasons to recognize Bangladesh includes one of them being the Lahore Islamic Summit. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto secured the idea of holding the Islamic Summit under the banner of the OIC in 1974 to talk about concerns about the Middle East situation in the aftermath of the war between Israel and Arabs in 1973. It also proved to be an essential forum for face-saving to acknowledge Bangladesh. In the end, Arab and Islamic nations used their Lahore Summit to convince Pakistan to accept Bangladesh. Six heads of state travelled to Lahore in the direction of Dhaka and invited Mujib-urRehman for the Summit. Thus, it allowed the government to free itself from this self-inflicted issue.

One of the significant benefits of accepting Bangladesh was that both countries might be able to build relations of friendship shortly. Therefore, the problems like prisoners of conflict, repatriation of citizens, and property division could be resolved.

Another necessary consequence of recognition concerning the 1971 war was how the country would develop Pakistan as a nation. Pakistan was then a completely different country, also in terms of geo-strategic. Talks about the further division of Pakistan and the varying attitudes of various nations towards Pakistan were standard in the era. However, the role played by Zulfiqar Bhutto in the OIC as well as his global travels and even events such as the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, supports Pakistan significantly.

In the end, however, it was evident that the detachment of Pakistan as it was reconstituted into Bangladesh was merely the result of the failure of our diplomacy, both civil and military. Our rulers weren't rational reasoning. However, they were demagogues. So, despite having learned an important lesson, we have created circumstances in which the East Pakistan-like situation can occur again in what's remaining from Pakistan soon.
